DuOud, Maga Bo, Filastine, Pochoman, Uber Lingua DJs
DuOud combine the North African lute and electronic technology with an imaginative freedom that sets them apart from their contemporaries. They build a musical cycle that draws on their African roots while integrating elements of contemporary French music, from break beats and jazz grooves to metal guitar.
DuOud consists of two oud-playing Parisians, Tunisian-born jazz-trained musician and sound engineer Jean-Pierre Smadja (a.k.a. Smadj) and Algiers-born master oud player Mehdi Haddab. Fusing the electronic programming skills of Smadj with the virtuoso performances of Haddab, DuOud transports this most ancient and beautiful instrument immediately into the 21st century.
Rio de Janeiro’s leading digital contortionist, Maga Bo is a DJ/producer working with an international collision of styles, sounds, location recordings and beats. Using gritty street sounds, found, stolen and modified rhythms and melodies from Brazil, Morocco, India and beyond, his distinct sound is a borderless amalgamation of mashed up batucada, rai, capoeira, bhangra and skewed electronic beats.
His live performances are a hybrid mix of DJ set and live PA where pirate cassettes bought on the street, MP3s from the internet, obscure vinyl found in underground shops, original beats, unreleased remixes and exclusive tracks are selected, juxtaposed and mixed in a unique narrative.
Globe-trotting luddite laptopist Filastine fuses mutated multi-lingual hip hop with global street rhythms and international obscura to build new sonic territory, defined by nomadism, cross border collaboration, beat science and massive bass frequencies. Over the years, Filastine has delivered his style of sound clash to every type of club, squat and festival imaginable across the planet, delivering beats with his laptop, midi triggers, loudspeakers and percussion mounted on a shopping trolley.
Joining this feast of global sounds are Cuban reggaeton swooner Pochoman and trans-cultural party pioneers Uber Lingua DJs.
